THIS UNUSUAL SEASON: ASK US ABOUT MONTHLY RENTAL - SEPT 2020 - MAY 2021 ----------------------------- RATE NOTE: Email for reduced on rate for off-season visits for more than 5 nights (November through April) . If you are aesthetically minded, if you are looking for something particularly charming and special, you will love this Victorian waterfront cottage totally restored from the ground up in 2016. If you are seeking a very nice spot on the lake, you will love this property. Canoe, Kayak, Sunfish Sailboat, and more to enjoy. If you have rented cottages before, you know that location on the lake makes a difference. Our cottage is located on the favored east side of the lake, with best sunshine. It is located away from the boat traffic and boat wake waves, on a quiet cove open to the largest of the lakes bays. Nice swimming area for kids. Its has the important things experienced visitors recognize. It is a Victorian beauty, but fully restored in 2016 to high standards. Toasty warm in winter with lower level radiant heated floor, air conditioned for summer. Fully equipped kitchen, open-concept. We re-purposed original and vintage materials for this loved Victorian era cottage during our restoration. Every window and door has a story. Just ask us! Easy to use fireplace. Great for crisp mornings. Bedrooms include: one queen, one full and 2 bunks. Wake up in the queen and full bedrooms to sunrise on the lake. Spectacular views. Also upstairs, is a comfortable reading area and desk, a full bathroom with a 2 person, fully tiled shower, while the downstairs bath boasts a sparkling, new claw foot soaking tub. Downstairs, you will find a fully equipped kitchen, full-sized fridge, dual-fuel stove (gas stove top/electric oven), dishwasher and apron farm sink. Guests can dine on the old world dining table and Hitchcock chairs made locally, or at the kitchen peninsula. We have an open concept kitchen/dining/living room area which opens, through french doors, onto a large deck, just steps from the lake front. Enjoy the gas grill and picnic table for afternoon BBQs or glowing white lights and sunsets for a lovely evening dinner party. Bring your boat or jetski and tie up at our lakefront dock. This lake is great for swimming, boating, water-skiing and fishing. Private lawn and water front. Sunny side of the lake. The cottage is close to 'the Secret Spot,' (shallow area great for small children to play in the water). We live next door to the cottage. Our boat is parked on the south side of the dock in front of our place, your boat, if you bring one, is docked on the right north side directly in front of your cottage. Our area offers wonderful restaurants and grocers using locally produced food, Farmer's Markets (don't miss Litchfield's Saturday Farmer's Market!), the Gilson Cinema/Cafe, Antiquing, nearby fly-fishing, hiking, and biking. Stop in at a local farm for just picked corn or tomatoes, or an after dinner ice-cream cone. For anyone up for a Berkshires experience, we are less than a one hour, country drive from Tanglewood, Shakespeare and Co., Stockbridge, Great Barrington, Lenox, and the Outlets at Lenox. During the summer, we request a minimum 7 day booking, Saturday to Saturday. Also, we cannot accommodate pets, due to potential allergies of renters. However, there is a highly respected kennel close to the other side of the lake. Of course, it's great in the summer, but fall and winter offer their own special activities. Fall leaves, apple picking, hay rides and pumpkin patches in the country. Winter snow, skiing, flannel sheets and cozy fires. Our cottage can comfortably accommodate all seasons!

This is a very unique property. It is a converted ice house (originally built in 1840s and converted in 1940s) complete with thick oak-paneled walls, fieldstone fireplace and lofts. It sits on an acre of wooded property and is very private. It is a short walk to the waterfront on the East Side of third bay of Highland Lake just down the road. The waterfront area is a peaceful little piece of forested land right on the water with a dock and swimming area. If you have a motorboat, you can tie it up safely at the dock. You can also launch our canoe or row boat from there. It's the best of both worlds - you can swim and paddle all day but then unplug from the lakeside hubub, return to the woods in the evening and relax with the sound of crickets and toads. This is lakeside living at its best: a roomy, airy light-filled house with gorgeous views of the lake. Perfect for family gatherings. Our lake home has five bedrooms and two full baths; a large, open living room with a big TV and a large table for family dinners and games. We are right on Highland Lake, in the desirable third bay, just steps from the water. (There's nothing like walking out onto the deck, taking a few steps across the lawn and jumping into the beautiful clear water of HIghland Lake.) We have three outdoor spaces to enjoy: a covered porch w/ four rocking chairs, a screened porch w/ seating for at least 5; and an open deck with a table and chairs for 8 or more. You can use our two kayaks and two stand-up paddle boards, canoe and tubes and floats. In town, a store called Morsel Munk has all the additional water toys you could want to rent. We are at the end of long driveway, and have plenty of parking (enough for five cars). You'll enjoy the quiet and peace of the tranquil Litchfield Hills. In town are movie theaters, restaurants and R&B Sportsworld for the kids. We are only a hour and a half or so from Tanglewood and Jacob's Pillow, and a half hour from Norfolk, where the Yale School of Music holds concerts in the summer. The lake, though, is the main attraction. It is 7 miles around and about 3.5 miles long, stocked w/ fish and great for swimming and kayaking. You'll love it.

Picturesque Kent, Sharon -- and canoes are available to rent on the Housatonic River. Farmington River — thrills for every age with tubing you'll never forget. Kent is a very appealing art center full of great shops food and tourist attraction. The Norman Rockwell Museum in beautiful Stockbridge is a real "must" family affair. That town houses a stunning botanical garden and is a joy to stroll about; choices of great dining everywhere. There is skiing in Pittsfield and Great Barrington is a neighboring town also with a delightful choice of unusual shops and eating places. You can be young and adventurous or senior and crazy about all kinds of interesting pastimes and fit right in. I never go anywhere without my beloved chocolate Labrador, Sadie, and she did live in the Log Home for several years. So I know from experience this is a wonderful home to bring your dog. The lake is an incredible place to throw balls and sticks for water-loving pets. Choose one spot in the woods surrounding the lawns as a Poop Place. You can walk the dog off leash all around the house and on the many trails behind the house But please pick up after your pet before you leave — insidetoo, if it has coated the house with its hair, please make an effort to minimize it. I don't want to charge extra for a dog, so please do your part to leave nothing behind except its sweet aura.

What You wont find in the other area lake front properties up for rent is this kind of tranquility and Privacy! It is situated on what feels like 2 acres of spectacular lake frontage . No loud neighbors , motor boats ,jet skis, parties. Others may have a nice home on the water but they wont have the privacy ,beauty and tranquility this property affords. Fall is "ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL" here! Our unique 4 building ( only you occupy all 4 buildings) pet friendly camp is located on the finest vantage point on the lake for sunsets. Our nearest neighbor 200' away are the nicest elderly couple you would ever want to meet. Beauty, serenity, peace are the words I would use to describe our camp. One of the most unique and charming properties you will find so close to the large urban areas in CT and NY. This one of a kind property is located on West Hill Lake, which is the cleanest lake in Connecticut. The lake has an 8 horse power motor restriction, which makes it one of the most peaceful lakes and allows everyone to enjoy swimming, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding safely. The lake also sustains an abundant variety of fish and is stocked by the State of Connecticut. It has Kokanee Salmon, Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Brown Trout, Small Mouth Bass, Blue Gill, Sunfish, Bullhead, & Pickerels; a record 16lb. Brown Trout was just caught this year from the lake. You can also fish in the Farmington river which is only 10 minutes away. It is always stocked with trout and among the top ten trout rivers in New England. We currently have a Bald eagle that is fishing from a large pine tree on the property. We have seen him the past few days fishing in the lake and pulling out trout. Amazing and beautiful to see! Our lake is on a hilltop, surrounded by hundreds of acres of lush forest of evergreens, sugar maples, and birch trees which is a spectacle to see when the fall colors come out. Outdoor enthusiasts have a lot of choices for recreation. In addition to all the different ways to enjoy the lake, there are also quiet scenic roads for road biking, shady bike paths for family riding, hiking trails , vineyards for wine tasting, golfing , award winning restaurants all within 15 minutes (just ask we know them all intimately!) or go prowling for antiques at antique malls, shops or tag sales. No wild racing speedboats and lots of swimming, sailing, and boating. The North End Store is located at the end of the lake and is just a quick ride down the road. A quaint old time store with a mini restaurant that has live music every weekend with specialty cooking to go with it. Just around the corner is a public park with playgrounds, beaches with lifeguards and tennis courts. For those who like to golf, a public golf course is located approximately 5 minutes away with others within 20 minutes. Walmart, CVS, shopping, hospital, etc are only 10 minutes away. The lodge has two couches, large 50" screen cable TV and a working fireplace. As you walk onto the large screened in porch you can view sunset while you sit practically right on the water. Relax and take it all in. On the porch you will feel those cool summer breezes and 180 degrees of spectacular lake views. As you stroll down to the large private waterfront deck and dock you can relax with a drink in the two outdoor chairs or enjoy the gliding love seat in front of the boat house. There are two rowboats and a canoe for your enjoyment. We cannot provide motors for the fishing boats but you are welcome to bring your own motor or boat. We have one lovely trail made to a creek that is super easy to walk. There is a basketball hoop, piano, drums, ping pong table, air hockey table (you can tell i have a child, right) soccer net outside. Cottage (2000 sq. ft.) in West Hartland, CT
7.4 miles from Highland Lake
Now booking to families and couples for spring, summer, and early fall season. Hartland Pond (Pinehurst Lake) is a QUIET private community of 35 cottages on a small private lake approximately one quarter of a mile across. The water quality is a high rate in the State; clear and clean. Swimming, canoeing and fishing are all excellent (small mouth and large mouth bass). There is a private clay tennis court that requires smooth soled tennis shoes and many miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. The lake sits in the middle of water district property and state forest, and is truly hidden away. The 'cottage' is actually a large summer home built by our family in 1946 with a large stone fireplace, and is a three season home from June - early October. The cottage is not insulated and has no central heating. Wood is provided to use in the fireplace which will warm the living room and kitchen areas. There is a large screened-in porch within 50 ft of the water, a 20’ X 20’ dock for lounging and swimming and a big canoe for paddling and fishing with a wonderful beach and float dock directly across the lake. This is our family retreat for a good part of the spring , summer, and fall, and we rent to only a few selected clients to supplement expenses. We will accept quiet, well behaved families and couples only. No singles or party groups. Maximum number of rentors day or night is 10 people. There is no DSL Internet and limited cellular service, so it’s a great getaway from our plugged in world. You can leave your devices behind and talk to your friends and family and play board games as our family has done for generations. This is a gated, private, family-oriented lake community, very quiet, no motorized watercraft or ATV’s allowed. Conversations can carry across the lake, so respecting the peace and quiet for the people that reside here is extremely important. The Farmington River, a premier trout fishing river in Connecticut, is nearby with trophy trout and fish management areas for fly fisherman. There are well marked walking trails on the lake and water district property for your hiking enjoyment. The Riverton General Store is 10 minutes by car and the town of Winsted is 20 minutes away for shopping. Keywords: Lake Cottage, quiet family groups and couples only

Cabin in Norfolk, CT
8 miles from Highland Lake
Birchfield is a collection of four cabins on Tobey Pond with direct access to hiking trials at Great Mountain Forest. The "Gamekeeper" is the main cabin, tastefully updated with a full kitchen. The "Cellary" is a magical tiny stone house. The "Studio" is an inspiring place to sleep with a wall of windows. The "Flippery" is a kid's dream. All the cabins have a retro-rustic camp feeling. Its a great choice for families with kids and big groups. We provide bedding and lots of extra blankets. The space This is our second home that we love dearly. Please treat it as you would your own home. These cabins are perfect for a family vacation or artist retreat (they were used in summer 2017 for local writer's fabulous retreat called "The Cabins"). The Birchfield Cabins: Our set of four cabins are collectively known as Birchfield, a name we adopted from the original owners. Gamekeeper is the main cabin, made of a Sears-kit, circa 1910. It has a full kitchen (I like to cook and bake have equipped the kitchen well), dining room with built in benches, charming living room with a fireplace, screened porch, 1.5 baths, a communal shower stall, and 2 bedrooms (one with a queen bed and one with a twin). This is the cabin my family of three makes our home base after extension upgrades (new drywall, floors, paint, and furnishings) in 2017. The Gamekeeper dining table easily fits 8 (extra chair is in living room). 9-10 can squeeze in. For larger groups, there is a small table in the Cellary that can be used the end of the dining table with chairs from the kitchen. The Cellary is the picture-perfect stone cabin with a fireplace, ½ bath, and queen bed. It is hands down my mother-in-law’s favorite and is perfect for a couple or anyone who prefers a darker sleep environment. The Studio is my sister’s favorite. It has a wall of windows that are fully screened. With everything opened up it is almost like sleeping outside. It has a ½ bath, and full bed. The Flippery is my daughter’s favorite. It has three twin beds in the main room, and a bunkroom built into former coal storage room. Extra blankets are in a tub in the closet by the bookcase. Heat: It can get chilly at night in Norfolk and the cabins are not insulated or heated (which we find is great for sleeping). Please bring some warm layers. The wiring in the cabins cannot support a traditional space heater, but there are two safe heaters in Gamekeeper you can use. One is located in the kitchen next to the garbage. The other is in the twin bedroom’s closet. If you do use please do not leave on and unattended in the cabins. Make sure you place in an area where they have 10 inches clearance on all asides. Norfolk tends to cool down at night, so if you open windows at night, and close in the day, the cabins stay cool ever in a heat wave. There are also fans in the closet of the single bedroom in the Gamekeeper. In the case of rain, please make sure the windows in the Gamekeeper are closed to protect the new drywall. Windows: The windows in the Gamekeeper are a little tricky. They are held up with a latch system. To lower, unlatch and carefully lower into the wall. When raising them be sure they are latched (which might take 2 people until you get the hang of it). Connected: We are intentionally unconnected at Birchfield. There is no phone line, and cell service is limited (I get one bar from ATT in the cabins). If you need to make a call, service is better at the end of the driveway and strangely good in places in GMF (see below). There is no wi-fi at cabins. The library in Norfolk has good and free wi-fi (in a pinch, you can use from parking lot). Hiking: Birchfield is surrounded by the 6000-acre Great Mountain Forest with tons of hiking and running trails. There is an official trail map in the Gamekeeper as well as map drawn by a neighbor with additional unmarked trails (on frig). A couple favorite options: 1) the 2-mile trail around Tobey Pond (open only to homeowners and their guests), 2) blue trail and overlook trail (see the GMF map) which can be reached from the end of Gamefield Road (first ½ mile is unmarked). Nearby alternatives to GMF include Dennis Hill State Park (park at first parking lot and walk up trail) and Haystack Mountain, where a short hike up is rewarded with a 360 view of the area (we recommend parking at entrance and following trail for about 20-mins to the top but you can drive most of the way if you prefer). Parking: There is ample parking at Birchfield in the circular driveway. Avoid the first 30 feet of the driveway since there is a dead birch tree down there that mother nature is going to bring down at some point. Cleaning: Each cabin has a broom and disinfectant wipes and Gamekeeper has other cleaning supplies (including rags to clean) by the shower. We use the vinegar solution for most cleaning (because it is safe for the pond). We like to leave our shoes on the screened porch and bare-footed inside. But even with that practice I end up sweeping every day. Packing a pair of slippers or wool socks is a good idea. Wiping down the kitchen counters will keep ants to a minimum. Guest access Cooking: The Gamekeeper kitchen is fully equipped, although the exhaust fan over the stove does not work (think of it as decorative). The dishwasher does work (hooray!). There is a Weber grill you may use. Please limit food storage and consumption to kitchen, dining room, or outdoors. Gamefield Beach: Birchfield is located next to Pinefield, the main house perched at the top of the gorgeous meadow. The two properties share a beach area that we call Gamefield Beach. There are two huge picnic tables tucked back in the shade. There are also two canoes, two kayaks, and two SUPs you are free to use. Since it is shared with Pinefield, you are likely to see the family who lives at Pinefield and their guests. Fireplaces: You are welcome to make small fires in the fireplaces but please, NEVER leave them unattended. You are also welcome to use the firepit next to Gamekeeper. Please do not leave unattended either and dose with water when finished. Extra firewood is in shed next to Cellary. Bugs: Birchfield is in the woods, and sometimes it can be buggy. Ticks are a concern so we recommend long sleeves, long pants (tucking your pants into socks), and a hat when walking in forest. It is also a good idea to spray up with natural oils or DEET before heading out for a walk (especially your feet)—there are a bunch of bottles of various options on the Gamekeeper screened-porch by the door. The Gamefield Beach tends to be much less buggy. Linens: We will leave bath towels on beds for each guest. Please do not use these at the pond. Beach/old towels that can be used at the pond are located by the front door of the Gamekeeper Cabin (additional beach towels are in the dining room bench). Please hang wet towels (and suits) on the clothesline outside (not inside on furniture). Clothespins are in Gamekeeper “mud room” (next to shower stall). Other things to note -We provide towels (beach and bath) as well as all the bedding (extra blankets for cold nights!) -There are no air conditioners but the nights are usually cool--in fact down right chilly at times so please pack cozy layers. -We provide firewood for outdoor firepit and fireplaces in the Gamekeeper and Cellary -This is a quiet and serene place. There is no TV or wi-fi, and cell service is limited (except a few dropped calls). The adorable Norfolk library in town (3 miles) has good and free wi-fi (in a pinch you can park outside and use). There is a radio and a collection of CDs (mostly from the 90s). If you are visiting with kids I recommend bringing some audio books which can be great fun. -There are a TON of books to borrow during your stay. -There is ample parking for up to five cars on a circular driveway.
